Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall in South Carolina early Sunday morning and is moving inland, bringing with it heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding.
As of 5 a.m. ET Sunday, the center of Chantal was about 70 miles east of Charleston and about 85 miles southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 50 mph and it was moving north at 8 mph.
The hurricane center said the storm's center is expected to move further inland into South Carolina and then North Carolina through the day Sunday. Chantal is anticipated to rapidly weaken now that it has made landfall, "with the system opening up into a trough in 26-48 hours."
Chantal became a tropical storm Saturday morning off the coast of South Carolina, prompting tropical storm warnings for portions of the Carolinas.
Forecasters said on Sunday that tropical storm-force winds extend up to 115 miles from the storm's center. They said 45 mph winds were reported at Apache Pier, South Carolina, which is about 100 miles north of Charleston.
Tropical storm warnings were issued from the South Santee River in South Carolina to Surf City, North Carolina.
Forecasters expect Chantal to produce heavy rainfall across portions of the coastal plain of the Carolinas through Monday, with a total rainfall of two to four inches, with local amounts up to six inches. This could result in flash flooding.
South Carolina's Emergency Management division had warned residents earlier of the possibility of isolated tornadoes along the coast and of minor coastal flooding.
It also warned drivers not to venture on water-covered roads or around road closure signs where flooding occurred.
The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 until Nov. 30, with peak activity typically occurring between mid-August and mid-October.
NOAA officials predicted a 60% chance of an "above-normal" Atlantic hurricane season, with between 13 to 19 named storms. Six to 10 of those are expected to strengthen into hurricanes, and three to five could become major hurricanes, forecasters said.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Some of the Lowcountry kicked off the Fourth of July early with fireworks shows.
One North Charleston neighborhood celebrated Independence Day on Sunday night, which was free to the public.
The Northwoods Baptist Church Fourth of July celebration is a fan-favorite to many, bringing thousands of people all to see their big show.
People from the community started to get their best seats in the house hours before the show started.
The church served free hot dogs and snow cones before the countdown.
“It’s open to the community, and the neighborhood and all, so everybody’s welcome. There’s no way you can’t come or anything. Everybody is welcome and you get to know new people and talk to them,” community member Francis Forbes said.
Forbes and Dennis Doerr, who are churchgoers, said this goes beyond a good fireworks show.
Doerr also mentioned he was most excited about hot dogs, the fireworks, meeting friends and spreading the word about God.
Several church members said this is a perfect example of celebrating America’s independence by having all people from all religions come together.
“I’m a Baptist, always have been, but there are people who are Roman and Lutherans, Catholic. You’ve got all different kinds. So here we have the freedom,” Doerr said.
This specific firework show has been going on for over 25 years and continues to grow, bringing in people for faith, freedom and fireworks.
“I’m most excited for just the friendships and being able to bond with everyone. Especially watching the fireworks, it only happens once a year, so you’ve got to enjoy it while you can,” attendee Hunter Peeples said.

Firecrackers will flash across Charleston's stunning skyline once again this year, offering yet another spectacular Fourth of July for the Lowcountry.
If you're looking for a special setting to embrace the patriotic holiday, consider watching the dazzling light shows aboard the flight desk of the USS Yorktown. This year's event will feature two separate stages with local bands, the opportunity to explore parts of the Yorktown museum and more fun family activities to honor the national holiday.
"Every adult hits that point where you think you've been to every kind of fireworks show," said Sam Elkin, Patriots Point's director of marketing and communication. "If you've seen one, you've seen them all, right? That is until they've seen this one — which is the most unique fireworks show in Charleston — with unmatched views and sightlines of multiple fireworks shows across Charleston harbor. It's truly something special."
If you're in Summerville, head to the Fireworks and Freedom Festival, where there will be glow sticks for the little ones and the shuttle buses running from behind town hall to Gahagan Park.
"It's really a great event for Summerville, as well as for those from Moncks Corner or North Charleston looking for something a little different from what they're used to," said Rigel Kocur, Summerville Parks and Recreation Department's marketing and events manager.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A relatively new nonprofit is working to provide affordable housing to Lowcountry and Palmetto State adults with nowhere else to turn.
The organization Berry Manor Boarding Home specializes in both memory care and supportive housing. They provide affordable, long-term, nonmedical residential care to elderly, disabled and memory-impaired adults—including U.S. Veterans and people suffering from conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Founder Deanna Miller-Berry says what they’re doing is a completely new approach to addressing the needs of people who are falling through the gaps of the health care system. Veterans without support from Veterans Affairs and seniors with pending disability claims are at the top of her client list.
“The whole premise of our program is making sure when these families trust their loved ones to us, they know that they’re going to be loved,” Miller-Berry says. “They know they’re going to be cared for and we’re going to make sure they get the health care that they need. Between good, old-fashioned science with basic, holistic foundations of community and love, this is what we are building.”
This week, Miller-Berry and her team are opening up their eighth home, this one in North Charleston. At least six people will live in the home.
Every day, a small, but dedicated, staff will spend hours at each home, cooking meals, reminding residents to take their medications and helping them set up home health care.
Miller-Berry says communal living is the key to making this system work. Many of the seniors are on fixed incomes that are too low to afford housing, health care and necessities.
She says they provide those things, like food and beds, in a home-style setting that helps clients with memory issues connect with their environment. While they leave the actual medical care to outside nurses and doctors, Miller-Berry says having a community can work wonders on health.
“We pride ourselves on making sure that we provide an atmosphere that’s conducive for healing. We use a very holistic approach, which is old-school traditional love. Literally,” Miller-Berry says. We take the time to be able to pour into them in a way that makes them feel like they’re still a part of society and they’re still contributing to building what we call all our new community of folks.
The nonprofit is rapidly expanding with new homes popping up throughout the state all the time. Berry-Miller says she expects to go from the current eight homes to 17 homes by the end of the year.
