But choosing a new roof can be easier said than done. There are a lot of things to consider, such as choosing the roof replacement materials you want to use. To help make your life a little easier, keep these popular options in mind.
Asphalt shingles have a wide range of colors, styles, shapes, and sizes to suit your needs, too. One of the major advantages of asphalt shingles is their affordability compared to other roofing materials like slate and metal, which can be pricey. However, it's important to note that asphalt shingles may not hold up as well as slate and metal during hurricanes in South Carolina. Fortunately, advancements in technology have led to the development of premium quality asphalt shingles with increased durability, such as those with algae-resistant granules or impact-resistant reinforcements, which can better protect against severe weather conditions.
Asphalt shingles are a popular and cost-effective choice for many property owners due to their versatility and durability. These shingles are made up of layers of fiberglass mat that are coated with asphalt and covered with ceramic granules for protection against various elements such as moisture, wind, hail, and UV rays. This combination of materials makes asphalt shingles resistant to fire, rot, and pests.
Slate roofing is a high-quality roofing material that is popular in South Carolina for its distinctive appearance and long-lasting benefits. Natural stone slabs form the composition of slate roofs, which are highly durable and fire-resistant. They're also resistant to rot, insects, hail, and wind damage, making them perfect for safeguarding homes in South Carolina. When considering this option, be sure to consider how long you plan to live in your current home before committing. Installation costs may be higher than other options since slate tends to be more labor-intensive than other materials.
They are lighter in weight, making them easier to install, and resistant to hail, wind, fire, and UV rays, making them ideal for protecting against harsh weather conditions common in South Carolina. What's more, metal roofs often come with long warranties and tend to be more energy-efficient than traditional roofs. With a variety of colors and styles available, you can customize your home's appearance while still taking advantage of the longevity and protection that metal roofs provide.
Metal roofing is an excellent choice for those looking for durability, longevity, and resilience against extreme weather conditions. With a composition of thin sheets or panels of steel, aluminum, copper, or other metals typically recycled from other sources, metal roofs offer many advantages over traditional asphalt shingle roofs.
843 Roof was born out of dedication to our customers and a steadfast commitment to quality. Unlike some roofing companies in South Carolina, our business strategy is simple: work hard, don't cut corners, be honest, and provide reliable roofing guidance. It's really that simple. KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) - Kiawah Island could be expanding its Town Hall campus with a Civic and Cultural Center and Wednesday, the town is taking a unique approach to the process.
After launching a national design competition, the town has selected three firms as finalists. Those teams will present their conceptual designs to the public Wednesday afternoon at the Town Hall.
The event will be held inside the Council Chambers, where residents can view the designs and learn more about the project. The presentations are scheduled to occur between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The competition is not about choosing one specific design. Instead, the town is selecting the firm and team behind the concept. The finalists were picked from 12 national submissions earlier this summer. Over the last six to eight weeks, each of the three remaining teams has developed its own vision for a Civic and Cultural Center on the existing 21-acre Town Hall campus.
Town officials said the proposed center could feature a performing arts auditorium, gallery space and flexible areas for meetings and community events— all amenities the island currently lacks.
“I think why everybody’s so excited about the potential is because the Kiawah Arts Council has been putting on programming for more than two decades. The challenge has been that all of these are held in churches nearby, clubhouses; all of those venues are less than desirable from a sound quality standpoint, comfort seating, et cetera. This is an opportunity to have a dedicated purpose-built facility that will provide an opportunity to the community to really truly benefit from the programming that the council’s been putting on for a long period of time,” Mayor Bradley Belt said.
Belt said that, although they want the best design and the most efficient process, there are a variety of factors that go into a project like this one. Considerations like funding, functionality and long-term planning are still ahead.
“We’re choosing the firm based upon their creative vision and the depth and breadth of their team because it’s not just the architectural firm. They’ve also got affiliates that deal with theater design acoustics, construction firms and landscape related issues,” Belt said. “We want to make sure that the team that’s selected is the right one to lead this project.”
Belt said Wednesday’s unveiling is about getting residents involved and helping them envision the potential of the space, rather than letting them decide.
“There’s not really an opportunity to vote on one design or another because there’s a whole host of considerations,” Belt said. “The public may be blown away by one design, but that may not be a cost-effective option. It might not be the best team or it might not take the best advantage of the site conditions. So, this is really just a chance for the community to see what we’ve been seeing evolve over the last several weeks.”
Belt said the main goal of this addition is to take advantage of the full 21-acre campus by utilizing it to give back to the area and the people who live there.
“This is really an underutilized campus right now, 21 acres that just houses administrative buildings and the council chambers. But, we hope this becomes a true asset for the community, for residents of the sea islands, not just Kiawah Island residents, but also visitors to the islands,” Belt said.
Once the design selection committee chooses a winning team, the project will still need Town Council approval before moving forward. If approved, officials expect construction to take at least two years.

Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island made Dr. Beach’s top 10 list thanks to its natural beauty, wildlife sightings, and laid-back vibe.
The greater Charleston area is far from lacking in beaches. From the relaxed vibes and surfing waves of Folly Beach to the jaw-dropping beachfront homes along Sullivan’s Island, several top-tier stretches of coast tempt local Charlestonians and visitors alike. One of those beaches also happens to be the best beach in the South, according to Dr. Beach himself.
Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, otherwise known as “Dr. Beach,” is a scientist, author, professor, and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. His expertise and his interest in beaches led him to create his official beach ranking system, which he then uses to curate his annual America's Best Beaches list. While Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York, received top honors this year, Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island was the highest-ranked beach in the South, coming in at No. 6.
Most of Kiawah is a gated private community, but Beachwalker Park, on the west end of the island, is open to the public. “This is a nature-lovers’ coast, so visitors can bring their canoes and kayaks to paddle through the tidal inlets. It is also fun to walk or bicycle down the fine-grained sand beach to Captain Sam’s Inlet to see thousands of birds,” Dr. Beach stated. “The water is not clear, but it is clean and provides fantastic seafood.”
In order to find the very best beaches, Dr. Beach evaluates each coastal destination using 50 different criteria, including noise, trash and litter, access, and “intensity of beach use,” meaning how crowded or uncrowded it is during peak season. Beachwalker Park is far from an undiscovered gem, but it’s typically less crowded than other Charleston beaches in the summer—thanks, in part, to the fact that it’s about a 45-minute drive from downtown. Notably, that drive can be even longer during peak season.
Along with offering a classic beach day, Beachwalker Park is a great spot to see dolphins feeding or watch the sunset. Walk down to Captain Sam’s Inlet, past the end of the park, at low tide; it’s an area that’s also conducive to kayaking or standup paddleboarding.
There is a snack bar at Beachwalker Park during the summer. However, if you want a more substantial beach lunch—or you’re visiting in the off-season—swing by Freshfields Village before setting up your chairs and umbrella. The open-air shopping center has a grocery store, coffee shop (Java Java), a gourmet deli (The Station), and a grab-and-go beach bodega (The Co-Op).
