While winds were 60 miles an hour, they've weakened now to 50 mile per hour winds.

Chantal will be a big rainmaker for the coast, bringing two to four inches of rain and rip currents.

At 5 p.m. EDT, the storm’s center was located about 95 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, and 165 miles south-southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina. Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 45 mph, and it was moving north at 7 mph .

Tropical Storm conditions are expected for the coastal waters and Georgetown and coastal Horry counties tonight through Sunday morning.

Life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected along the coast through Sunday.

The storm’s center is expected to move across the coast of South Carolina late Saturday or early Sunday, with some additional strengthening forecast before landfall.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tropical Storm Chantal has made landfall along the South Carolina coast as officials warn of rough surf and flash flooding as the system continues to slowly make its way inland.

Lifeguard organizations across the Grand Strand have reported performing rescues of those who ventured into the rough waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical Storm Chantal had maximum sustained winds of around 50 mph at landfall, which occurred at Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, early Sunday morning.

As of the latest advisory, Chantal has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Chantal is expected to continue to rapidly weaken now that the storm has made landfall.

Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect from South Santee River, South Carolina to Surf City, North Carolina.

"The number one impact by far will be the locally heavy rain, especially along and where the center comes on shore north of (Folly Beach) sometime late tonight, but more than likely, sometime Sunday morning, maybe before sunrise, maybe just after sunrise," FOX Weather Storm Specialist Mike Seidel said from Folly Beach. "It's a broad center at this point."

Tropical Storm Chantal is expected to produce heavy rain across portions of northeastern South Carolina on Sunday and across portions of North Carolina through Monday.

Rainfall totals of 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts of up to 6 inches, is expected. This is increasing the risk of flooding across the region.

In addition, a combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the coast.

A storm surge of 1-2 feet is possible from South Santee, South Carolina, to Surf City, North Carolina.

Isolated tornadoes are also possible on Sunday across portions of eastern North Carolina and extreme northeastern South Carolina.

Rough surf and potentially life-threatening rip currents are also likely along beaches across the area.

Forecasters said on Sunday that tropical storm-force winds extend up to 115 miles from the storm's center. They said 45 mph winds were reported at Apache Pier, South Carolina, which is about 100 miles north of Charleston.

Tropical storm warnings were issued from the South Santee River in South Carolina to Surf City, North Carolina.

Forecasters expect Chantal to produce heavy rainfall across portions of the coastal plain of the Carolinas through Monday, with a total rainfall of two to four inches, with local amounts up to six inches. This could result in flash flooding.

South Carolina's Emergency Management division had warned residents earlier of the possibility of isolated tornadoes along the coast and of minor coastal flooding.

It also warned drivers not to venture on water-covered roads or around road closure signs where flooding occurred.

The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 until Nov. 30, with peak activity typically occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

NOAA officials predicted a 60% chance of an "above-normal" Atlantic hurricane season, with between 13 to 19 named storms. Six to 10 of those are expected to strengthen into hurricanes, and three to five could become major hurricanes, forecasters said.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WIS/WCSC) - This July 4th weekend will be the last in South Carolina under the state’s current liquor liability system.

Bar and restaurant owners across the Lowcountry hope a law signed earlier this year will help them stay open once it takes effect Jan. 1, 2026.

Some fan-favorite bars in downtown Charleston, like Share House or Uptown Social, have had their fair share of struggles when it comes to keeping doors open with high liquor liability insurance costs.

“I mean, we were at a tipping point,” said Keith Benjamin, co-founder of Uptown Hospitality Group.

They weren’t alone.

High-cost liquor liability policies have led to several businesses in the food and beverage industries shutting their doors.

“It was frankly a runaway train,” Benjamin said.

The new law keeps in place an existing requirement that alcohol-serving establishments maintain an insurance policy with at least $1 million in liquor liability coverage. But it will allow businesses to lower their coverage costs if they implement certain measures, like stopping the sale of alcohol at midnight, having employees complete alcohol server training and having less than 40% of total sales be from alcohol.

Benjamin also explained the impact the upcoming law will have on their well-known businesses throughout the Lowcountry.

“We see a lot of folks in and out the door, and we certainly are not immune,” he said. “In fact, we were on the front lines of getting smacked in the face with those massive, massive hikes. We look at this bill as a step in the right direction.”

With the hospitality industry being one of the major revenue sources in Charleston, a failure at the State House to enact legislation like this, after years of pleas from bars and restaurants to do so, could have led to prolonged struggles in the Lowcountry and the state as a whole.

Benjamin said his business has already implemented many of the steps that will be required in the new law, such as proper scanners and safe service training.

Other businesses and state officials have pushed for this bill for years.

“It is our sincere hope that this bill lessens the burdens for our small businesses and the hospitality industry that drives Charleston,” said Rep. Spencer Wetmore, D - Charleston.

El Jefe Mexican Cantina owner Roy Neal said that King Street’s lively atmosphere, especially on a holiday weekend, can leave room for liability.

He hopes that will change next year.

“I like the aspect that they’re requiring training and certain things. The more training you can have with your bartenders, your front door staff, and your servers, the better. That’s always a good thing,” said Neal.

Although most businesses approve of the upcoming law, others have raised concerns over the requirements to qualify for lower coverage costs.

A number of South Carolina restaurants are in potential hot water over the shrimp they use in their dishes.

According to the federal lawsuit obtained by PEOPLE, filed with the District of South Carolina on Friday, June 13, by the South Carolina Shrimpers Association, 25 restaurants across the state are being challenged for their “false and misleading representations” of selling “local” shrimp.

According to the suit, the local shrimping industry is integral to the state’s tourism industry, generating billions of dollars for South Carolina. The accused are allegedly intentionally conflating the “local, high-quality product” grown by the Shrimpers Association with “a product of inferior quality and distant origin,” which damages the state’s reputation.

These accusations allegedly violate both the federal Lanham Act and the South Carolina Unfair Trade Practices Act, both of which govern trademark law and unfair competition.

Leaders of the Shrimpers Association publicly announced the lawsuit at the Pineapple Fountain in downtown Charleston, S.C. “This fountain, with its graceful waters, represents the very essence of what we, as South Carolina shrimpers, strive to embody: a genuine, honest welcome,” said South Carolina Shrimpers Association Vice President Bryan Jones, per WCSC.

“We believe that when we invite our family, our friends, and our cherished guests to our beautiful Lowcountry, they deserve nothing less than the real, authentic thing — and in this case, that means our delectable and incomparable, wild-caught South Carolina shrimp.”

The lawsuit was amended on Thursday, July 3, to include all 25 restaurants.

PEOPLE reached out to several restaurants listed in the lawsuit but have not received immediate responses. However, a couple of the accused have released statements regarding the legal action.

“When we say [South Carolina] shrimp, we know it’s from [South Carolina] because they are coming directly from our known vendors, and we have the receipts to back up those purchases,” stated a spokesperson for Mount Pleasant Seafood. “When fresh local shrimp are not available, we do have frozen local shrimp that we will sell until fresh become available.”

Crave Hospitality Group stated to WCSC, "We take sourcing and transparency seriously at Mill Street Tavern. We were exceptionally surprised to learn we’ve been named in a lawsuit and are actively reviewing it with counsel."

Also “floored” to be named in the lawsuit is Page’s Okra Grill, who spoke to the outlet, stating, “We agree that restaurants should not advertise using all local shrimp on their menus, which is why we don’t do that and so we are angry to be lumped in that category. We do not claim on any of our menus that our shrimp is all local or East Coast.”

The Shrimpers Association is requesting to be awarded an undisclosed amount towards “actual damages, treble damages, attorneys' fees, and punitive damages” along with “any such other relief that the Court deems just and proper.”
